Everything Old is New Again

So it seems that lately i've been listening to alot of music that sounds much like the music that i listened to in say 1986 and this is a good thing i believe, it's being made by kids who were probably toddlers or in utero, kids who came to John Hughes long after the glow had worn off and i've been thinking how most of this stuff would be right at home on his soundtracks, as Gulfboot pointed out Mr. Hughes always said he was nothing more than a frustrated guitarist and if you listen to the albums by The Drums or Wild Nothing or the Pains of Being Pure at Heart you'd swear the shit was some band that slipped under the radar way back when you were a kid sitting on your friends couch watching these flicks... ( a digression, i was talking to my new bud Chester on saturday, he's a tall good looking gay man all of 22 and i was regaling him with a story about how i was once making out with a girl who didn't know how to kiss as i listened to the Violent Femmes, i had put the Violent Femmes on the juke and told him how i listened to this album everyday when i was 16 and he smiled and said that he wasn't even born when i was listening to this record and making out with a girl who was a horrible kisser, way to much mouth and teeth, damn near abusive i'd say in the make out dept. and though i never hit a home run i did make it to third base which he thought was quite hysterical)...

It also occurred to me that no one has ever really posted about what happened to all those kids from my favorite flicks and as i was wandering the streets high and smiling it occurred they'd be roughly the same age as me now if not a little older, i mean Andie and Stef and Blaine and Ducky were all pretty much seniors and i was only a freshman or sophomore and i so i kind of imagined what became of my movies friends, the same as Facebook really...

Andie (Pretty In Pink) never really got over Blaine, who dumped her under familial pressure after a year or two at university where he was studying law of course, Andie went to junior college and worked her way through school and suffered through two divorces, her self esteem never got any better, in fact it got worse and she ended up being bitter but dressing stylishly and being the manager of a chain bookstore where she spent to much time worrying about her job and lack of love life, you can find here hanging out in the downstairs part of the hipster bar drinking martinis and worrying about her plump ass before she walks home to lay in bed and stare at her ceiling while petting her two cats...

Blaine of course got his law degree but was never really any good at it, got a job through family connections and never achieved even a jr. partnership, he married a trophy wife and had a couple of children and soon discovered that he liked gay bars and making out with twenty something boys, of course he keeps this to himself because his whole life has been about what he should be and not what he wants to be...

Stef is a tough one, i could easily see him getting wrapped up in the first wave of new junkies and spending daddy's cash until one day he OD's in the pool house and is found by the maid, of course the other option is that he became a hedge fund manager with a predilection for blow and goes through women like a Mexican goes through tongue tacos, he's rich and successful and lives in Manhattan and feels like something is missing cuz deep down he knows, just like his ex-best friend Blaine told him, that he is shit...

Duckie- Duckie on the other hand graduates and spends the next few years working in cool bars as the bar back or doorman and occasionally picking up the early shift, he lives in shit apartments and still pines for Andie while watching her go through two shit marriages, the whole time remaining her best friend and confidant, he dates sporadically but it never really works out because basically none of the girls are Andie, he spends most of his 20's and early 30's not being a very good drunk and afraid of the hard drugs because as he is fully aware he can barely handle his liquor, around his early 30's he tires of working in hipster bars and goes to some business school and accrues a bunch of debt so that he can work in an office where he never really gets promoted but is universally loved it seems by his co-workers for his Zen like way of dealing with the world and sage advice that he hands out to those in need, a very decent human being indeed... coming soon The Breakfast Club.

Thanks for the update. Have you seen Molly Ringwald recently? Yikes! Not that I'm all that pretty anymore.

I'm goin' to Cleveland next week to visit my family. The Cleveland Zoo. The Art Museum. (Is the construction done?) The Cuyahoga County Fair. The usual stuff.
